"A nation that continues year after year
to spend more money on military defense
than on programs of social uplift
    is approaching spiritual death."

-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?", 1967

                 >>o<<

IF GEORGE BUSH looks out of the Oval Office window tomorrow
he will probably see the biggest peace demonstration in
   Washington since the Vietnam War.
But he will not see hippies or long-haired peaceniks.
He will be looking instead at a huge cross-section of Middle
America: doctors, corporate lawyers, chief executives,
lorry drivers [that's "truck" drivers to those of us in the usA],
nurses, military families, grandmothers, even families of
September 11 victims. And they won't be burning the American
flag. They will be carrying it with pride.
Most Americans support President Bush and his desire to disarm
Iraq, but polls show that they do not believe he has yet made the
case for using military force, and across this vast nation there
are deep misgivings about a war.

   from article #6, below

                 >>o<<

   Chicago's City Council voted 46-1 to oppose a pre-emptive
military attack on Iraq unless the country is shown to be
a real threat to the United States. The resolution makes
Chicago the biggest U.S. city to speak out against war.

   from article #6, below

                 >>o<<

On Monday a group of prominent [U.S.] Republican business
executives published a full-page letter in the Wall Street
Journal headed "A Republican Dissent on Iraq".
It began: "Let's be clear. We supported the Gulf War.
We supported our intervention in Afghanistan.
We accept the logic of a just war.
But Mr. President, your war on Iraq does not pass the test.
It is not a just war." It continued: "The world wants Saddam
Hussein disarmed. But you must find a better way to do it."

Many chief executives believe that Mr. Bush should be focusing
on the fragile US economy, not attacking a country 8,000 miles
from Washington. This is hardly 1967. The message today is:
"Make Money, Not War." [a twist on the 60's message of
   "Make Love, Not War!" -LM]

   from article #7, below

                 >>o<<

Many Hollywood luminaries have opposed a war.
Martin Sheen, the star of The West Wing, led a march of 10,000
in Los Angeles last weekend. Others are being told by their agents
that to do so publicly would harm their careers.
Michael Kieschnick, a march organiser, said: "When those millions
get engaged, whether through street events, letter writing or
visiting the representatives, Bush will have to pause."

>1) Antiwar Activists From Across U.S. Preparing for
>    Weekend of Protests (Washington Post via A.N.S.W.E.R.)

From:      A.N.S.W.E.R., [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date:       1/13/03

By Manny Fernandez
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, January 13, 2003; Page B01

Dallas lawyer Robert B. Dennis is headed to Washington
this week, one of about 50 Texans willing to endure a
22-hour bus ride.

Amer Mirza, a Web developer from suburban Chicago, has
been signing up Muslims in his area for seats on a charter
bus he plans to ride.

Casey Chapman, a senior at Catholic Central High School in
Troy, N.Y., will join a dozen other teenagers in a
chaperone-driven van.

Dennis, Mirza and Chapman are a fraction of the thousands
coming to Washington for a national antiwar demonstration
Saturday, a rally and march that they and organizers say
will be their last chance for a massive display of dissent
before the United States goes to war with Iraq.

"The Iraqi people are not our enemy," said Dennis, 70, a
member of the Dallas Peace Center. "We don't need to
subject them to another war and more bombings."

Saturday's rally and march follow an October protest that
drew about 100,000, a turnout organizers and police said
was the largest antiwar demonstration in the nation's
capital since the protests against the Vietnam War. And
like the October protest, this action has drawn
counter-demonstrators who vow a loud but peaceful rally.

The same coalition that coordinated the October rally,
International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism),
is organizing this week's protest. Brian Becker, an ANSWER
spokesman, said it is too early to tell whether the crowd
will be as big as or bigger than that at the previous
march. But he said tens of thousands are planning to make
the trip, as organizers from Texas to New York to
Wisconsin arrange for charter buses, car caravans and
flights to the District.

"The most important thing politically for us is to shatter
the false myth of consensus," Becker said.

D.C. Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey said he "wouldn't be
surprised" if the turnout in Washington matched that in
October. He said that his department will be ready for
that size crowd but that he does not expect disruptions.
Previous ANSWER protests -- including a pro-Palestinian
rally in April that attracted about 75,000 -- have been
relatively free of incidents. "We don't anticipate any
problems," Ramsey said. "It's been a peaceful group to
date."

The rally is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on the Mall
near Third Street and Constitution Avenue NW just beyond
the west front of the Capitol. Scheduled speakers include
actress Jessica Lange, Vietnam veteran and author Ron
Kovic, former representative Cynthia A. McKinney (D-Ga.)
and others from labor, peace and Muslim organizations.

After the rally, participants plan to march to the gates
of the Washington Navy Yard, where organizers said they
would call for the elimination of U.S. weapons of mass
destruction. They emphasized that no civil disobedience is
planned.

Counter-protesters say they will rally at Constitution
Gardens on the Mall at 9 a.m. Saturday and later greet
marchers outside the U.S. Marine Corps barracks at Eighth
and I streets SE. The D.C. chapter of the national
organization Free Republic, a frequent counter-presence at
protests, and MOVE-OUT! (Marines and Other Veterans
Engaging Outrageous Un-American Traitors) are organizing
this event.

The ANSWER protest, which will have counterparts in San
Francisco, Canada, Spain and elsewhere, organizers say, is
one of several Washington antiwar rallies coinciding with
the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. ANSWER
organizers also have planned a youth and student march at
11 a.m. Sunday from the Justice Department to the White
House.

Also Sunday, two antiwar coalitions, D.C. Iraq Pledge of
Resistance and United for Peace, plan an 11:30 a.m. rally
at Farragut Square followed by a march to the White House,
where organizers said at least 50 people will conduct
civil disobedience, though details are being worked out.
Activists said they wanted to link King's opposition to
the Vietnam War to the current peace movement.

Monday, the holiday marking King's birthday, the national
activist group Black Voices for Peace plans a rally to
celebrate King's legacy and oppose war against Iraq. It is
set for 3 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church in
Northeast Washington.

About 220 organizing centers in 45 states are coordinating
transportation and spreading the word about Saturday's
ANSWER rally, 70 more than in October, said ANSWER
organizer Sarah Sloan. Some groups that brought one
busload to the rally in October said the response this
time required them to have two or three buses, while
others that were unable to attend the previous
demonstration said they are now making the trek.

Sara Iglesias, 29, an activist and writer in Miami Beach,
said she has been fielding up to 10 phone calls and up to
15 e-mails daily from people seeking transportation to
Washington. "We have three charter buses now, and we may
do another, and that's not counting the people who are in
caravans or flying up," she said. A high school teacher, a
civil rights lawyer and a Holocaust survivor are among
those who have signed up for seats, she said.

In October, Iglesias helped organize one bus of
protesters. "We've been in touch with many more people due
to the fact that we've made more connections and the fact
that this antiwar movement is going more mainstream and
getting more publicity," she said.

Mirza, 23, of Glendale Heights, Ill., said one 55-seat bus
is almost filled with Muslims and supporters, and another
might be needed. "There has been a lot of hate crimes in
Chicago after 9/11. Now, the fear is they will get more
extreme" if the United States wages war against Iraq, said
Mirza, a founder of the Muslim League.

College and high school students from 400 campuses
nationwide are planning to attend, organizers said.
University of Iowa student David Goodner is joining
classmates on a 17-hour bus ride to Washington. Student
Carl Sack at Northland College in Ashland, Wis., who
attended a march there in October, is set to board one of
three buses for the national rally.

Chapman, 17, is coming to the District with fellow members
of a youth group called Free the Children. "I think that
people have to realize that it's never too young for
people to be involved with activism and making your voice
heard," said Chapman, who also marched in October.

Activists said they hope the demonstration energizes a
U.S. antiwar movement that has shown signs of gaining
momentum in recent weeks, as military preparations and
troop deployments for an assault on Iraq have escalated.
The march was timed to precede the Jan. 27 deadline for
the first major report by weapons inspectors to the U.N.
Security Council.

That date had been viewed by some Bush administration
officials as a decision point on whether Iraq's
cooperation has been sufficient to head off a military
strike. Last week, though, Secretary of State Colin L.
Powell played down the date's importance.

Organizers said they fear they are running out of time.
"The American people have very little time left to tell
President Bush -- in their voice, which he can't ignore --
they don't want our United States of America to become an
aggressor nation and attack Iraq," former U.S. attorney
general Ramsey Clark said at an ANSWER news conference in
Washington last week.

Clark founded the International Action Center, one of the
groups that led the effort to create International ANSWER
as a response to the Bush administration's war on
terrorism. He has drawn criticism as an outspoken opponent
of the Vietnam War who traveled to that country during the
war.

Subsequently, he has served as a lawyer for Slobodan
Milosevic, the former Yugoslav president on trial for war
crimes, and Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the Egyptian cleric
convicted of masterminding the 1993 World Trade Center
bombing.

But many of those planning to come to Washington said that
the views of the organizers are of little concern to them
and that the larger antiwar movement is bigger than any
organizing group.

"I'm told they're some kind of radicals, but I don't
care," said Dennis, of ANSWER. "Good organizers are worth
their weight in gold."

report.

>2) Peace Demonstrations in D.C. and S.F. (Tikkun)

From:        TikkunMail, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date:        1/16/03

Contents:
       I. Where Tikkun demonstrators will meet
II. Analysis of the weakness and strength of this
            demonstration  January 18
*************************************************
 I. Details of the Tikkun Community participants

Washington, D.C.
There will be Tikkun Community contingents who have
chartered buses to arrive in D.C. However, because there is
no predicting the timing and traffic, we will not have one
shared launching place for the Tikkun Community contingent,
and it may be hard to find each other. There will be a
Tikkun table--please look for it. Please carry signs
identifying yourself as a member of the Tikkun Community. And
please tell people to come back to D.C. for our Teach-In
to Congress  June 1-4  (details on the web at www.tikkun.org).

San Francisco, Calif.
       Details:
Meet at 11a.m. at the Valencourt Fountain (the chunky
fountain in the middle of Justin Herman Plaza), where we
will join with other Jews to march.

The coordinator for this is Michael Kramer, so he's the
man to look for--he will have a big banner reading
"TIKKUN--Healing and Transforming the World."

The Beyt Tikkun childrens' program participants will be
meeting at 11 in front of the Boudin Bakery in Justin
Herman Plaza on Saturday.  That may be a convenient place
for the Shul to meet also, suggests David Fierberg. Then
the two contingents could meet up and merge. Other Tikkun
children and families are invited to join.

If you can't make the march, but would like to find the
Tikkun Table at the Civic Center rally (starting 1 pm), you
can call Samantha Tretheway on her cellphone: 510-847-0038.
We will have brochures, magazines, and copies of "Healing
Israel/Palestine" there.

Please bring signs that indicate you are
Tikkun Community people. It makes a difference for our
future to have our presence known by others who share our
perspective of being anti-war but pro-Israel (and
pro-Palestine, because we see both peoples' fates as mutually
interdependent and dependent on our ability to create peace
and reconciliation of the heart). So invite people to come
to our discussion of Israel/Palestine next Friday night at
951 Cragmont Ave, Berkeley (after Shabbat services which
start at 7, and a veggie pot-luck at 8). Or to check us out
on the web www.tikkun.org and www.beyttikkun.org.
Or to go to our table and buy Healing Israel/Palestine or
a copy of Tikkun with its articles analyzing the misguided
nature of Bush's war against Iraq. Invite them to Join
the Tikkun Community.

(((((((((((((   ANALYSIS    )))))))))))))))))))

Though many members of the Tikkun Community
are participating in the demonstrations against
Bush's war in Iraq, for reasons articulated in
the editorials and articles in Tikkun opposing the
war, many are doing so with some degree of concern.
The group that sponsored this event, A.N.S.W.E.R.,
has been hostile to Israel and used these
demonstrations to mis-educate about the
complexities of the Israeli/Palestinian struggle.

Although we at Tikkun are critical of Israeli
policy, we are also critical of acts of violence by
some Palestinians, and believe that these acts of
violence are an important part of the reason why Ariel
Sharon has grown in popularity and why many Israelis despair
of peace.

We do not accept a one-sided account of the Israeli/
Palestinian struggle.

As Rabbi Michael Lerner demonstrates in his new book
Healing Israel/Palestine (available only through Tikkun:
order by calling 415-575-1200 or emailing
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) both sides have co-created this mess
and any discourse which tries to make one side the bad
guys and the other the innocent victims is deeply
distorted. Yet that is exactly the rhetoric that we have
heard from A.N.S.W.E.R. in the past.

Moreover, there is a kind of unsophisticated anti-
Americanism that gets articulated in this context which
ignores the reality that Saddam Hussein is in fact a
very evil person whose role has in fact been very
destructive and genocidal. It is true that the war in
an attempt to extend American power, that it will provide
American domination over oil fields and deepen America's
reliance on fossil fuels (with their attendant destructiveness
to the ozone and the atmosphere), and that it is likely to
encourage yet more wars in the future. These are good
reasons to oppose the war. Still it feels that we are being
manipulated when we are subjected to a group of mindless
speeches and slogans whose knee-jerk anti-imperialism rarely
articulates the deep and compelling reasons why we should
oppose the globalization of capital.

We approached the A.N.S.W.E.R. coalition and asked to
be given enough time (minimum 15 minutes) to put forward
our more complicated analysis, but were turned down.

Many people have wondered how the A.N.S.W.E.R.
coalition got into the position to run this demonstration. The
answer is that they are heavily infused with a Marxist sect
group, the Revolutionary Communist Party, and they were smart
enough to get the permits and begin to advertise for this
event and the march last Fall. But there are other peace
coalitions being formed, and in the future we will work with
them. In the meantime, this is what is happening now, so many
local Tikkun Communities are participating because their upset
against the war is stronger than their upset about who and
how these demonstrations are being run and who gets to speak
at them.

But it is no surprise that although there is likely
to be a massive outpouring of energy against the war,
that many of the powerful forces that could actually play
a role in stopping the war are not institutionally involved
in these demonstrations. Future mobilizations should seek
to get the labor movement, the churches and synagogues,
and the Democrats more centrally involved. That can't be
done if a sect group seeks to use this opportunity to
advance its own interests. rather than seek the broadest
possible involvement.

And that  is also a reason why we are asking you to
now begin to plan to come to Washington, D.C. to the Teach-In
to Congress June 1-4. If that teach-in is to be effective
it must include people from every US congressional district,
and that will only happen if you come and if you start telling
your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and contacts all over the
U.S. that you want them to come and be with you there. More
info at www.tikkun.org or in the next issue of Tikkun.

There is another complaint we have about this event:
that it is held on Shabbat. While most Jews do not observe
Shabbat and so that won't be a factor in their
non-participation, some of us do, and this makes it extremely
difficult to participate. Yet, as we've insisted in the past,
The Tikkun Community is not just for Jews, and so it is not
surprising that many local Tikkun communities will be out in
force in Washington or San Francisco on Saturday. If you are
going, please carry a sign identifying yourself as part of
the Tikkun Community--you'll find yourself meeting many people
who come up to you because you are part of a community that
affirms their highest ideals. And invite them to the Teach-In
June 1-4 in D.C.or at least to join (at www.tikkun.org)

****************************************************
Meanwhile, don't let the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr.
fade away--let non-violence flourish in our deeds and
in our words.
