Folks,
...planning how much to sow if i can store outside next season.
Does anyone have experience or anecdotal info from oldtimers re the outdoor
fall/winter/spring storage of Swede turnips, carrots, beets?

I recall a picture of laying out a round bed of straw in a clear spot in the
field, mounding up the turnips without separation, covering them with 8"-12"
of straw, and then with a layer of soil.
Is this adequate to keep all the roots from freezing? Is rot a common
experience?
What percentage would go to little nibblers?
Do they tend to nibble all over, or concentrate on the sunny side?
Would deer paw away at the carrot mound?
Should a fence be around it?
Is this a relative waste of effort?
thanks, ...manfred....
