Not long ago my local newspaper reported on a survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. They found that a higher percentage of people in the medium to high income brackets than of people in the low income said that they could not afford to buy everything they wanted! The financially poorer people interviewed seemed to be more contend to live within their means. I wonder how many of the low income people had a comparably low income, because they choose not to work more hours or a higher paid and more stressful job, because they are not so materially minded, but have other values that are more important to them.
