Deborah - Sorry to be light-hearted about a serious topic, but your description reminded me of one of our (free-range, much-loved pet Maran hens) who, for some unknown reason, lost the feathers on her rear end. Her skin was also bright red, quite startling if she suddenly bent down to peck in front of you. We called her Ol' Burning Bum and she lived to a ripe and productive old age. Tony N-S.
