Hi , You are very right static / shared variable retains values after post back , and 
different sessions share same variable , so , normally need to be used based on your 
need , following things u may consider :   1. Application variable is key - value 
based , that can be shared over application in different sessions , that is maintained 
at server . Can be initiated in Global.asax and also Ended out there in it's standard 
events . Also try to understand that Application variable can be used throughout the 
application , by any file ( .aspx , .aspx.cs , .ascx , ascx.cs , once it's being 
defined in global.asax.cs )    2. Static variable will be comparatively Lighter , 
being a simple variable , it be will shared by various sessions but it can only be 
used for given file in which it has been declared , it can't be willfully used in any 
file in the project you feel like ,   hope it's clear ,   regards , Mrinal
