Hi   If you are looking at what uniquely identifies an assembly in .Net,  then it is 
the composition  Name + Version +Culture+Public Key(in case it is strong named) This 
is called as the Identity of the assembly     In COM ,  as registry was the single 
place which was used to store the information about the components,  there was a need 
for an unique identifier for every component   In the case of .Net as the assembly is 
within your app directory( in the case of private assembly),  this is more a problem.  
In case it is Shared and available centrally in the GAC, then the requirement of the 
public key makes it unique.     regards,   sr
