The problem is say suppose, i have 3 webservers in a webfarm. Each has its own machine key, when a request goes to webserver A and then when you click any other url in the site. It might goto Webserver B , since the machine key is different for each machine this ViewState will get corrupted. The workaround his generate a machine key and put the same machine key in all 3 servers in the machine.config file. Note: This is actually a bug in Windows 2000 Server, in 2003 it work's fine.............
