There are 2 ways to deal with this a) As mentioned by Gaurav, place a copy of the Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls.dll file in the bin dir(physically copy it or set "copy local=true" in VS.Net). Simple and it works b) You might ask tht when u already have the assembly in the GAC why do u need a local copy. Valid Question and the answer is that you CAN use the GAC installed assembly itself and do NOT need a local copy. But in that case u need to refer the assembly with the full identification in your aspx which is "Name+Version+Culture+Key". So if u want to use the GAC installed assemblty and do not want to have a local copy in the bin, then instead of <%@ Register TagPrefix="ie" Namespace="Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls" Assembly="Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls" %> use <%@ Register TagPrefix="iewc" Namespace="Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls" Assembly="Microsoft.Web.UI.WebControls, Version=1.0.2.226, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" %> This will solve the problem(Just ensure that the version number i have mentioned above is the same as the one u have installed on ur machine.
