 First MyTechEd session :)
It was pretty eventful session :)
Though the registration started late, we had a good Keynote by Dilip Mistry from
Microsoft on future of Microsoft products. Kamaljit Bath from Microsoft gave an intro
and a demo on InfoPath 2003. Lucius Lobo from Mahindra BT gave insight on Security
improvements in Win2003, Amber Mukarjee from Intel on developments in Intel as a
Platform Partner, Gopal Rajan from IBM on support for .Net in Rational Suite,
especially XDE. Tejas Shah, Final year student who won Imagine cup for his project
'Sanjeevani' shared his thoughts. Tarun Anand briefed about MyTechEd as a event and a
brief history of TechEds. After this sessions started.
First Session : SQL Server 'Yukon' - .Net Programming features by Rajiv Sodhi, a
Developer Advisor in Microsoft
Yukon is developing as a scalable, secure, enterprise data management platform. Key
features are Enterprise Data Management, Programmability and Business Intelligence.
The session concentrated on Programmability aspect of Yukon server. Notable features
in Yukon are .Net Integration, XML Support, API Languages, Developer Tools, and
Relational Extensions. With Integration of .Net in Yukon, we can program .Net
Assemblies for SQL server and register them. We will have System.Data.SqlServer as a
new namespace for integration. With XML integration we can have new data type as XML
and we can attach schema for the same. XQuery can be used for retrieving specific XML
elements. The best feature would be SQL server exposing a web service that can be used
on any platform.Lot of exciting demonstrations were shown. Some handful of articles on
Yukon are on net.
After the sumptuous meal the next session started.
Second Session : Extending SQL server functionality with User-Defined Functions:
Hidden Tricks by Srimathi, Sr. Software Architect, Vishwak Systems
The possibility of redefining system Stored Procedures as UDF has lots of exciting
possibilities. This practical session concentrated on some tips and tricks on
combining UDFs and Indexed Views or indexed columns to combine extra flexibility and
performance at the same time. Many undocumented UDFs were demonstrated that could be
used for optimizing the database queries. I found some good resources on net for
SQLServer
After the tea break, the next session started.
Third Session : Designing for Performance by Praveen Srivatsa, Director, In4Velocity,
MSDN Regional Director
This was an interesting session was based on Planning, Optimizing for performance and
Preserving Performance on SQL Server. It also highlighted the changes expected in
Yukon. Effective logging, Table width optimization for optimal storage, vertical and
horizontal partitioning (covering) and fragmentation were explained in detail. There
are umpteen articles available on Sql Server performance tuning.
After another tea break, the next session started.
Fourth Session : ADO.Net for ADO classic Developers- Morphing from ADO Classic to
ADO.Net by Sanjay Shetty, CEO, Wireless Strategist
This was an insightful session for classic ADO developers moving to ADO.Net. It was
summing up of all those features that are not possible in ADO.Net which were possible
in ADO. It also provided good workarounds for those features of classic ADO in
ADO.Net. This was a very old discussion with more practical examples.
All the presentations and other artifacts are yet to be posted on MyTechEd homepage.
Thanks to efforts of Rajiv, Indian Bloggers who have attended TechEd event can
register @ TechEdBlogger Site. Register ur blog there
Have a great day
