Welcome to Microsoft.com, the
world's largest business Web site.
Our Mission:
Through the
innovative use of Microsoft software, Microsoft.com provides a global exchange
of ideas, knowledge, and technology that helps people incorporate the full value
of technology into their lives and businesses.
Microsoft.com
Overview:
When www.microsoft.com started in 1994, the entire site was
hosted on a single server that handled about a million hits a day. As the
Internet expanded, more and more groups at Microsoft began adding content to the
Web site. Today, more than 500 writers and developers working in more than 70
locations around the world provide information for the Microsoft Web site and
five data centers manage our online traffic. Within those data centers, 60
servers host general Web content, 14 servers host SQL, 18 respond to site
searches, 40 servers handle download requests (along with thousands of global
caching servers), and 10 host FTP content.
Our Web site uses 100 percent
Microsoft technology. Our Web servers run on Windows Server 2003. The search
servers, which receive 90 requests per second, run Microsoft Site Server 3.0.
The database servers, which handle more than 1100 databases and support an
average of 400 concurrent connections during peak business hours, run SQL Server
2000 Enterprise Edition.
