Hi Anand,
Thats a good question. To put it in a nutshell, design is a part of architecture.

Design is primarily about one's own perception based on one sees and hears into
knowledge[be it graphical/textual] It can be a collective approach . Architecture is
primarily about cognition as to how people process information and construe
relationships between different pieces of information. One can say design is more of a
protyping and architecture is more of conceptulazing. Architecture, unlike design,
implies complexity. Archicture emerges from past practice and collective input, it is
not a descrete act like design, hence no verb.

    So,
    - First as a developer you code. You know how to code to achive what is expected.
You will know which is the better approach. Scope is limited!
    - Then u move on to become designer/analyst, you will get better knowledge of
what goes where and why. Scope expands!!
    - Then u become Architect. By then, you will have huge KB behind you to decide
what fits where. You have a big picture!!! Nirvana

If you want in-depth knowledge of Architecture.. refer [http://www.bredemeyer.com]
and, especially to know what is not a part of architecture check
[http://www.bredemeyer.com/whatis.htm#What%20Software%20Architecture%20Is%20Not]

Hope that helps
Have a great day :)
