You cannot. You need to use dynamic SQL for this as shown:   DECLARE @strSQL 
VARCHAR(100) 
DECLARE @au_id VARCHAR(10), @au_fname VARCHAR(100), @au_lname VARCHAR(100)
SET @strSQL = 'DECLARE myCursor CURSOR FOR SELECT au_id, au_fname, au_lname FROM
