Hi Senthil, Null is a special type in the database that represents the concept of an 
"unknown value". It is different from a zero length string. A zero length string is 
actually a know qty of  "/0" or sting terminator.   Hence the result.   In fact, I 
think the use of <> operator on null is a lil misconstrued. Lemme explain with an 
example.   try    declare @var varchar(20)
select @var = '' if @var <> null print 'not same as null' else
print 'same as null'   as against   declare @var varchar(20)
select @var = '' if not( @var is  null) print 'not same as null' else
print 'same as null'   the results are not the same :)   -Diwakar
