Hi Balaji, That is quite a vast topic for me even to begin scratching the surface. So
what I am going to do is quickly ennumerate the different options that we have (
staying within the Microsoft domain, ofcourse :) ) One single code base targetting
many applications and devices - Pervasive computing, in short is supported in the .NET
framework in the form of SDKs, IIS server add-ons and Pocket PC (or other mobile
devices running win CE ) based applications. One would need the mobile application
development toolkit, .NET framework and VS.NET to begin developing a mobile
application. For a web application in particular, one would also need VS.NET mobile
web forms and mobile internet toolkit. sticking to developing web apps that target
mobile devices, the mobile web forms contain the required framework for creating ASPX
pages that spew out mobile device specific formats of data which can be viewed on the
mobile browsers. WAP,Chtml ( compact HTML ) to quote a few examples. Now, For you to
be able to decide which format to send the data to the mobile browser in, the server
needs to be able to identify and switch according to the device that is requesting for
the resource. The mobile internet toolkit works along with the IIS server ( of course
I am assuming that it has to be installed ;) ). This is kind of like an ISAPI filter
that decides how to process the request depending on the header of the incoming
request. In a nutshell, you would search for the following: VS.NET , VS.NET mobile
web forms and mobile application toolkit. I am afraid I will not be able to provide
you with any links for the lack of time now....May be later :) Hope this helps
Regds, Diwakar
