Hi, File groups are used to manage the System files (data and log files) created by
SQL Server 2K. By putting the files under filegroups you can group and control where
to put all the data files over which the data is placed. If the filegroup comprises
multiple files spread across various physical disks, each with its own disk
controller, then queries for data from the table will be spread across the disks,
thereby improving performance. Similarly you can also place tables having similar
structure under one file group for better File IO. For eg if you have data comprising
of text, ntext, image type, you can place them under one file group to help improve
performance. For more details pls visit the following site: SQL Server 2000
Administration in 15 Minutes a Week: Database Creation Basics

the details regarding the Filegroup concept in SQL Books Online(BOL). Search for "File
and Filegroups" or "Physical Database Files and Filegroups" HTH, Regards, Vaibhav
