Do you want to notify them if they are online or Do they need to check it manually on clicking on some link. If you wish to notify them instantly if the are online ( browsing some pages on your site ) .. you could try a simple trick. a) Let the instant message be saved in the database . b) Write a page that checks if the current user has any messages and returns XML . c) Write a javscript function that attempts to call this script and decode the response. d) Include this script in all the pages. e) Set up a simple timer in javascript that executes this function after every 'x' seconds .
