Just a suggestion

If you are using UI to let the user decide, which columns, he wants to see or doesnt

Use formula fields in your report & dont set its value. If the user selects a,b,c 
field, set those formula fields's value to =a,=b,=c
respectively

Keep a min. of fields which will anyway have to be shown & rest of the fields, will 
entirely formula fields, with no values in it. The values of which will be represented 
by user's field selection
