Hi Srividhya, Yes you are right, this caching the execution plan has very good
performance boost only till sql server 7.0 - till then only stored procedure exection
plans are cached and any tsql statements has to be recompiled everytime but in sql
2000 it is not so, even the tsql plans are cached. visit this
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/architec/8_ar_sa_99wl.asp
But by using the Stored procedures, when you update the records, the Lock that is
held, the time will be very less when compared with the lock that is help for any
statements that comes from the client. The network traffic will be reduced if you
are going to execute a series of statements and return a processed output to the
client. For sending a bunch of records to the stored procedure you can use the XML
documents and OPENXML feature of sql 2000. visit my site
http://www.vijrag.netfirms.com/OpenXML.htm for implementation. The DAL as you said
depends on the size of your project. If the Project is a Huge one and if you are
maintaining transactions in COM+ then what u said may be right but if your project is
medium/small, maintaining the transactions in stored procedures is the best way.
