You cannot suppress these errors in SQL Server. Based on the severity of the error, 
SQL Server will raise an exception which will be caught in the calling code. To 
produce a custom error, you need to trap the error in the exception and then display 
your required message.   Your other question of finding out what column is causing the 
problem requires parsing of the error message that SQL Server returns.   Srinivas
