I have been using Dataset for exchanging information between Web service and ASP.NET
Client. Recently I have joined another company. And my project manager has asked me
to clarify few issues. Mentioned below is his mail.

Following has worked fine so far for me:

We can use simple varibales like string, integers or complex objects like dataset as
parameter in a ASP.NET client calling web method at web service.

The web service can return simple varibales like string, integers or complex objects
like dataset. and simple strings as parameter

I believe we should go ahead with Dataset. I will be waiting for your reply.

NET mentors reply with solid points that i can prove my point to my PM.

 Thank you and regards,

 boy

Before we can progress with the development of the web service function, it has to be
realized that the http transport support mechanisms can only move text type of data
(i.e. strings) between the client applications and the server. This would have been
painful were it not for XML which allows us to encode the text streams with a strong
logical format.

(1) Are you certain that the http transport protocol can move a dataset between a
client computer and a separate web-server?

(2) A MS dataset is not an open standard. A predefined XML format is an open
standard and any client running on any platform can access our webservice based API
functions. This is not possible using a dataset parameter.

(3) A dataset will be encoded in MSs native XML format whereas we will have
predefined templates (XSDs) to dictate the standard properties associated with the
object that we are instancing.

Please think carefully about (1) and (2) before responding.
