If you have an invoice which runs millions of rows and you had deleted the first row, then you are going to update all the rest million-1 number of rows. This means you would indirectly lock the whole table. This is NOT the preferred method. On the contrary I would suggest that once it is deleted you can find missing numbers in the middle and then the newly inserted records can take those missing numbers. Just a suggestion. But Not sure if the business logic accepts the same.
