I use following approach:
I put all the files that need credentials, into a folder and other files in differet
folder and use two different web.config file in the folders.
web.config file in the folder that needs verfied users to have access will have
authentication and authorization section as follows
<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms loginUrl="login.aspx" name=".ASPXFORMSAUTH"></forms>
</authentication>

<authorization>
<deny users="?" />
</authorization>
So when an anynomous user try to access a restricted page , it is redirected to
login.aspx

In login.apsx u need to import System.Web.Security namespace
And when user is verified use following code
FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage(Session("UserName"), False)

Hope this will help you

rgds,
boy
