Abstract:
With the emergence of the software process improvement wave across the globe, most
software enterprises launched SPI programs with much fanfare. A plethora of models and
techniques were introduced, or extracted and extended from the popular Japanese
quality management practices. In their quest for business excellence, most
corporations took recourse in the comforts of seemingly silver bullet models and
techniques, hoping that a corporate renewal was in order. However, while every
software enterprise today has some certification to boast of, implying it has achieved
the hallmark of performance, the customers have actually remained without any
measurable benefits. The saga of the CXOs and the employees is not any better either.
While a bespectacled software geek appears to wear an amusing smile hearing of SPI,
quality audits and "processes", the poor CXOs are in a rather dilemmatic situation as
most of them cannot testify that they have gained from SPI investments but cannot do
away with the program because they will be out of fashion otherwise.
Bottom line: most of the QIP and SPI programs have not paid off, at least in
measurable terms for those they were actually intended - the customers and
stakeholders.

The purpose of this talk is to present some personal, deeply held views to generate
intense discussions to uncover the key to solving the above highlighted problem.
Drawing from his experiences and observations, and in an interactive manner, the
speaker focuses on unleashing the thought process vital for understanding and
implementing real quality. This talk seeks to surface why culture clash happens within
an organization engaged in SPI initiative and how such clashes can be addressed by
focusing on business contexts and by aligning with the motivations of the people in
the trenches. More importantly, the talk emphasizes on some critical skills the
evangelists of quality must possess to avoid employees screaming, "To hell with
processes."
Above all, this talk is aimed at helping quality professionals and organizations to
introspect and adopt an innovative approach to SPI and quality management.
