Before Page_Load, the controls are not guaranteed to be initialized. Only when you land in Page_Load can you say that all controls have been initialized. Look at the lifecycle of the controls and you'll get the clue as to why this is not possible. 1. Initialize 2. Load view state 3. Process Postback data (IPostBackDataHandler::LoadPostData) 4. Load 5. Send post back change notifications (IPostBackDataHandler::RaisePostDataChangedEvent) 6.
