Hi,   Yes you can play with xml string in your SP as well by using 
sp_xml_preparedocument & sp_xml_removedocument and after this use the openxml 
function to insert the xml data into a table, do your modifications inside the 
table with data modification language i.e. Insert, Update & Delete and if you 
want to return the data back in XML then you can use the for xml auto, raw or 
explicit.   I hope this give you an understanding of using XML String with SQL 
Server 2000.  With Yukon one will have more capabilities of playing with XML.
