Hi,

If I understand it correctly, the columns are defined at runtime 

So, while designing report, create columns based on formula field

e.g Have all the fields as formula fields instead of database fields 

At runtime, set formula field value according to columns that you wish to see

e.g. If user chooses that author_id, author_name, birthdate should appear, you 
will set formula1.value to author_id, formula2.value to author_name & so on
