1. I am new to VB 2005 and VB regular expressions. I have done text matching,
and not image
matching. I know regular expression in Unix.
2. I am not yet clear as to what you are trying match. If you would have given
4-5 examples,
it would have been clear as to what you are trying to match.
3. usually ^(hat, carat) is used to match a pattern at the beginning of the
expression,
that you have used as the second char
4. you have not used $ to match pattern at the end
5. You have not used + to combine various components of the pattern.
Dim patternEmail As String = "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" ' [EMAIL PROTECTED],
Dim EmailRegex As New Regex(patternEmail, RegexOptions.Multiline Or
RegexOptions.IgnoreCase)  ' page 1084, 1088 of SPD VB
Dim EmailMatch As Match = EmailRegex.Match(txtEmail.Text)
If EmailMatch.Success Then
   Flag = 0 + Flag
Else
   Flag = 1
  Arr(8) = "Email is not in format: [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
End If
In this example I have put + for two times to combine three components of the
pattern
(Please let me know if you have simpler expression for email validation)
6.I am assuming that you are using < and > are char and not special characters.
If you are
  using < and > as special characters, let me know what they stand for. In
html, they are
  used to denote tags, that part I know.
7. I also suggest that you write a one or two lines HTML/Text file and have
small regexp,  test
   and then try to increase the lines in HTML files and also complexity of the
regexp,
