I believe you can start GNOME by typing in gnome-session I'm not quite sure because I normally go into my BBB through the LAN, and then I ssh -X and do the gnome-session command. As to starting the BBB with gdm, I think you may have to edit /etc/ttys but then I normally use FreeBSD so I can't be too sure.
