The USB stick is formatted FAT32. From my reading I understand that FAT32 does 
not respond to chmod or chown. But that still leaves the question of how to 
setup angstrom to accept desired permissions. 

I did find out that forking another shell with the script as its argument (bash 
setup_sdcard.sh options) allowed it to run.
