I don't know if if there were changes that could impact this, but the image
you are using is a little on the old side. You could try the latest version
and get a different result.

Generally speaking, if the SW can't read a EEPROM, HW emulation, then it
most likely will not work. As to pulling USB, Linux is not all that
forgiving of that event.
