After sleeping on it, I am now leaning towards: beaglebone-universal-io (github project name) bone-universal-00A0.dts (device tree file name) You're right that dt is fairly redundant, and the whole point of this exercise is to make it possible to access special hardware modes (pwm, spi, etc) from userspace.
