I found it! Switching from 16 bit video mode to 24 bit fixes GTK.

I added this to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf


Section "Screen"

        Identifier "Builtin Default fbdev Screen 0"

        Monitor "Configured Monitor"

        Device "Configured Video Device"

        DefaultDepth 24
