There are known usb issues with the 3.8 kernel.. Please test with "either"
Ubuntu/Debian base microSD:

http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu
http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardDebian

Then,

cd /opt/scripts/
git pull
./tools/update_kernel.sh --beta-kernel
(reboot)

To pull in a v3.13.x based kernel..
