This is mostly kernel neutral. The basic idea works for any ARM system with device tree and pin multiplexing. When migrating from the BeagleBone 3.8 kernel to something newer there are a few changes to the device tree names and entries that will need to be accommodated. For instance I think the "off-by-one" numbering for GPIO banks was fixed in recent kernels.
