ok, seems the issue was one related to software and expectations.... and maybe a messed up debian install. when I entered the command 'speaker-test -c2 -f600 I expected a 600hz tone... I got white noise - but paying close attention to the text output, it said it was playing noise. starting with a freshly imaged card and following the instructions from there seems to have it working with the files linked from the instructions. Note to the designers of this cape - adding a stereo audio amp to drive headphones to a bit higher level would be extremely welcome.
