I remember having problems with the audio on the BBxM using Ubuntu around February of last year. Turns out the trouble was this:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/651302 I believe that I added a few lines to the /etc/rc.local script to make the appropriate alsamixer commands on each boot.
