I remember having problems with the audio on the BBxM using Ubuntu around 
February of last year.  Turns out the trouble was this:

I believe that I added a few lines to the /etc/rc.local script to make the 
appropriate alsamixer commands on each boot.  But, the audio does actually 
work just fine once you turn it on via alsamixer:
