Robert, thanks for responding. I just checked xorg.conf and it does/did 
have fbdev as you recommend.

Initially pcmanfm didn't impact cpu loading and only kicked in after 
awhile. This has repeated through reboots and power-off/power-on. Highest I 
saw it was around 53% but this was enough to seriously slow everything down.

I will have to read up on pcmanfm to try understand what all it does.
