What XML library are you using?  I built and deployed Expat 
(http://expat.sourceforge.net/) without having to do anything special, 
though I was using an older Ubuntu on a microSD card, rather than the 
default Angstrom/Debian.  Of course, the newer Debian eMMC image would 
allow you to apt-get the Python dependencies you need, or even Expat 
directly.
