I'm now trying the slightly different build instructions from
  http://eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone+Black
Maybe the result will be different. Although I'm not sure what's wrong
with the way I do it at the moment as the kernel is bootable and just
display/HDMI doesn't work.
I'll report back when I have new results.
