I used a MAX9812 <http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MAX9812HEXT+T/MAX9812HEXT+TCT-ND/2037124> amplifier chip and an electret condenser microphone <http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?KeyWords=102-1721-ND&WT.z_header=search_go>. Works really well.
