Correct, "wheezy" is still 2.7.3: https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/python You could use the "jessie" image, but even that is only "2.7.8".. This is the way debian works, what ever version of a package in the repo around freeze time, is the version you'll get. Bugs/Security patches can be added, but they don't upgrade for the sake of upgrading..
