Yeah, no one ever responded to this note. Would be useful to learn if this is a known issue. Maybe the people who are flashing the latest emmc images aren't the type to connect to their computer with the USB port.
In my case, I ended up using a wifi adapter to talk to the BBB. An Ethernet cable just isn't convenient given the location of my router. Never could get the USB cable to work after flashing the new image.
