Yes, /etc/X11/xorg.conf said DefaultDepth 16. Earlier, before the first 
boot, the same file on the SD card image said DefaultDepth 24. So, it 
appears that the edit has to happen after the first boot.

I changed DefaultDepth to 24 and got a nice-looking KDE desktop, but now 
the touchscreen calibration is off. I was unable to find a reference to 
commanding a run of touchscreen calibration.
