I have seen this too. Free air - some boards running at 40-45 some at 
55-60*C.
I suspect that it is a configuration issue, however, I have not been able 
to prove this.
Not the same code in each instance - and I'm not very strong on the SW side 
of
things so can't tell what the differences are.
I plan on spending more time on this in the near future - will let you know 
if I find something.
Hopefully, you may be able to narrow it down some too.
