I got it working by disabling wifi and reenabling. I am now able to ping 8.8.8.8.
The exact sequence was: > enable wifi > scan wifi > services > agent on > scan wifi > tether wifi on > tether wifi off > disable wifi > enable wifi > scan wifi > And the scan worked and I was able to connect.
