When I set up at the big Model RR Show in Springfield, I have my own 5-port 
switch, and set my *laptop* up as a DHCP and DNS server for my little 'LAN', 
consisting of my laptop (functioning as a server) and two RPis (next year, 
I'll be adding a third RPi and a BBB).
