I was able to find the info I wanted. It is topic "Cannot ping google in BBB even after sharing internet" and it was an answer from John Mitton.
I edited file interfaces under /etc/network and added two dns-nameservers lines for 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. I added the entries under iface usb0 inet static Then I rebooted (required) and it all worked. ---- I can now ping www.google.com or any other valid site and get ping data.
