I also use spacemacs and this is what I have in my "user-config" section of
.spacemacs:
(add-to-list 'load-path "~/code/beancount/editors/emacs/")
(require 'beancount)
(add-to-list 'auto-mode-alist '("\\.beancount\\'" . beancount-mode))
It works
