This assessment is pretty pretty good, and I agree with your
conclusions. This brings up another question about multiple servers,
but it's only tangential, so I'll make a new post about it.
Something to consider for version 2 and beyond is maybe a set of
flags, so that there can be an "unsafe" flag for disk error
conditions, but as you said, its not doable with the current protocol.
