Yes, that's a good point. I think this thread is mostly about some future time when we want or need to break compatibility. I personally would like to get as much mileage as possible out of the current protocol (which I think is quite a lot). For example, all of the features you just mentioned should be possible in 1.x. Speaking of priorities, I realize that 1.1 is practically unusable with async_observer because of the rehashing bug, but I wanted to get the binlog ready for 1.2. Perhaps it would be better to just release 1.2 without binlog and then follow up quickly.
